10 Things You Should Know Before You Buy!

What Game Room is Complete Without A Brilliant Wide-Screen TV?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take A Walk On The Wild Side With Our Top 4 Best 50 Inch TVs
Our Best 60 And 65 Inch TVs Are Featured Here As Well!
VIZIO D50u-D1
The VIZIO D series might very well be the most popular TV in America right now and it’s not hard to see why.
VIZIO has packed these TVs with loads of features, an excellent picture, and all served up at the famously reasonable VIZIO price point.
On our quest to find the best 50 inch TV the VIZIO D50u-D1 stands out as a customer favorite.
Specs
  • Screen size: 50 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Backlight technology: LED
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz real, 120Hz Effective Refresh Rate
  • Inputs: 5 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Component, 1 Composite, 1 ethernet, 1 TV tuner
  • Model year: 2016
Features
Released in 2016, the VIZIO D50u-D1 has a future proof 4K UHD display resolution.
4K displays have 4 times the number of pixels as 1080p displays, which was the industry standard just a few short years ago.
Simply put, 4K produces an image so real that your eyes can’t even tell the difference between the screen and reality.
The LED backlighting technology that the VIZIO D series uses has become the new standard.
With 12 LED zones the D50u-D1 is able to produce a high contrast ratio that shows dark blacks and bright whites.
Contrast is really what makes an image pop.
Your movies will look more beautiful and your video games more realistic with a high contrast ratio.
Unfortunately the technology that gives the VIZIO D50u-D1 such a great picture, also limits the screens viewing angle.
Viewed from the side the picture quickly loses it's colors and contrast.
Now to talk about the ever confusing refresh rate.
The refresh rate is the number of times a frame can be changed per second and is expressed in Hertz (so 60Hz = 60 frames per second).
Unfortunately the higher the resolution of the image, the more difficult it is to refresh.
This means that while 120Hz and 240Hz refresh rates are common on 1080p displays, most 4K UHD TVs have a refresh rate of 60Hz.
In fact, it's impossible to even deliver a higher refresh rate over HDMI in 4K UHD.
The VIZIO D50u-D1 has a refresh rate of 60Hz which is well enough for movies, videogames, and television.
VIZIO also uses other technologies to help improve the look of motion on the screen.
The VIZIO D50u-D1 is also a smart TV with built in dual band wifi.
Easily access your favorite apps like Netflix or HBO GO.
Netflix and other streaming services are starting to roll out 4K streaming which looks amazing on this TV.
If you plan on streaming high resolution video like that you should definitely use the ethernet port to connect directly to your router.
Your wifi will most likely have problems trying to beam the tremendous number of pixels that 4K requires.
One of my favorite usability features of this TV is the full keyboard that is on the back of the remote.
Searching for movies and TV shows has never been easier.
What is the VIZIO D50u-D1 best suited for?
Thanks to VIZIOs advanced motion technologies, the D50u-D1 is great for video games and live sports.
The action on the screen looks great and realistic.
Because of the narrow viewing angle, the VIZIO D50u-D1 is less suited for watching movies with a large group of people who need to sit off to the side of the TV.
But for those seated directly in front, this TV delivers one serious cinematic experience.
This TV is also great for those shopping on a budget.
VIZIO has always been a brand of the people and the D series is no different.
Sure you can buy a better picture, but for the money the VIZIO D50u-D1 is one of the best 50 inch TVs on the market.
Pros
  • Great contrast
  • Good at displaying motion
  • Excellent price
Cons
  • Narrow viewing angle
  • Looks a bit plain
Samsung UN50JU6500
Samsung is among the most respected brands in the electronics industry.
Their quality is unmatched by most and boy are their products beautiful!
Samsung TVs are always the ones that retailers like to show off at the front of their stores in order to lure people in.
The picture quality on these TVs attracts people like a street light attracts flies, but for better reason.
There are multiple Samsung TVs on our list of the best 50 inch TVs.
Specs
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Screen size: 50 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Backlight technology: LED
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz real, 120Hz Motion Rate
  • Inputs: 4 HDMI, 3 USB, 1 Component, 1 Composite, 1 Cable TV, 1 RS232C, 1 ethernet
  • Model year: 2015
Features
The 4K Ultra High Definition display on the UN50JU6500 places this TV in the top tier of TVs right now.
Not too long ago 1080p was the standard and everyone thought that screens couldn’t get any better.
Well now TVs with 4 times the resolution are being released and boy can you tell a difference!
It’s hard to imagine a more realistic image than what this TV can produce.
Buying 4K will cement your TVs place in the future.
LED and OLED screens are the latest technologies in the television world.
While OLEDs are found on super high end TVs that cost several thousand dollars, LED TVs can be had for just a few hundred.
On older LCD TVs you had compact fluorescent lights that lit up your screen.
Those are the same dreary lights you find in offices and Walmart!
Now with LED backlighting, TVs are lighter (by weight), use less electricity, and produce a better image.
If you are still chugging along with an old LCD TV, you need to upgrade to an LED today!
You will thank me, and you will thank yourself.
The real refresh rate for this TV (and nearly all 4K TVs) is 60Hz.
This means the TV can refresh the image 60 times per second.
This works fine because most movies are shown at 24 frames per second and most television programs are shown at 30 frames per second.
However, you’ll notice that Samsung advertises the UN50JU6500 as “120 Motion Rate”.
This is simply advertising.
While Samsung has some technology that helps the image look sharper, the real refresh rate is still 60Hz.
Samsung used their PurColor technology on this TV and it shows.
The colors are super rich and the images look just amazing.
Blacks are black and whites are white.
There aren’t any complaints about the image.
Another great feature about the screen is that it is glare resistant.
The screen as a semigloss finish that reduces glare.
It really works!
Of course, it’s impossible to eliminate all glare on a TV screen but the problem is much reduced compared to other models.
The Samsung UN50JU6500 is also a smart TV.
You can connect loads of different movie, tv, and music apps to this TV.
The UN50JU6500 has built in wifi, but I highly recommend using the ethernet cable to connect directly to the router.
4K video is extremely difficult to send over wifi and a hard line is the only way to guarantee that you aren’t losing any of that delicious picture quality.
Another great aspect of this TV is that you can hook a keyboard directly to it using one of the USB ports.
This is great for computer gamers since you can actually use this TV as a gaming monitor.
But try not to sit too close!
It might also be useful because the remote that comes with the UN50JU6500 has a built in web browser and the remote that comes with it is difficult to use for typing.
Without a physical keyboard you will need to search for movies by using the on-screen keyboard and the arrow pad on the remote.
What is the Samsung UN50JU6500 best suited for?
This TV is a great all arounder.
But because of it's anti glare screen and great picture, it’s particularly suited for movies and TV watching.
The UN50JU6500 makes a great living room TV for family and friends to gather around.
Pros
  • Great picture
  • Anti glare screen
  • Attractive design
Cons
  • Remote is hard to manipulate
  • It’s a 2015 model
TCL 50UP130
TCL is not a new company, but it may be one that you haven’t heard of before.
This is because unlike most TVs sold in America, TCL is a Chinese company that is expanding into the global market.
Of course, we all know that “made in China” is usually synonymous with “cheap crap”, but TCL is a serious company that has been making serious products since the 90’s.
While the 50UP130 is the cheapest TV on our list of best 50 inch TV’s, it is still a quality TV.
We expect that much like Hyundai and Kia did with cars, TCL will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Specs
  • Screen size: 50 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Backlight technology: LED
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz real, 120Hz Clear Motion Rate
  • Inputs: 4 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Component, 1 Cable TV, 1 ethernet
  • Model year: 2016
Features
The TCL 50UP130 has a 4K Ultra HD display resolution.
This creates a screen image so precise that Blu-ray discs, HDMI cables, and high speed internet are struggling to keep up.
But don’t worry, technology will soon catch up to display these incredible resolutions on your new TV.
Usually when the average person buys a TV they look at 3 things; size, resolution and price.
Of course, if you’re reading this site then you know that there is much more to consider.
But the TCL 50UP130 looks very attractive when you consider those 3 factors, in fact, it is one of the only 4K 50 inch TVs that is under $500.
This is a great buy for someone who is shopping on a budget.
TCL uses the same high quality LED backlighting technology as most TVs on the market today do.
LEDs are more energy efficient and product a better picture with deeper colors than other backlighting technologies.
While the TCL 50UP130 produces a better picture than even high end TVs of the past, it unfortunately can’t keep up with other similar TVs on the market today.
The biggest complaint with the 50UP130 is that it has poor contrast.
You’ll find that the TCL can’t produce the deep blacks that other similar TVs can.
We can’t really expect a 4k 50 inch TV in this price range to come without any flaws, can we?
Just like the other brands, TCL has it’s own “refresh rate” called “Clear Motion Rate”.
This is mostly a gimmick so that manufacturers can post a higher refresh rate without technically lying about it.
Although, TCL is slightly more deceptive about it than other brands.
Even on their website they list the 50UP130 as having a 120Hz refresh rate when most manufacturers will at least admit the true number under it’s specs.
Make no mistake, the TCL 50UP130 has a 60 Hz refresh rate.
One of the best features of this TV is it's native integration with Roku.
It basically has a Roku player built right into the TV.
Even the remote for the TCL 50UP130 is the Roku remote!
With Roku you have access to all of your favorite streaming services as well as hundreds or even thousands of channels and on-demand shows.
Back to the remote; the Roku remote actually has a headphone jack so you can silently watch TV without disturbing others around you.
The remote also can use voice to search and has a lost remote feature so you can easily find it between your couch cushions.
Pretty clever!
Also, when you download the Roku app on your smartphone or tablet you can cast pictures, videos, and music to your TV.
What is the TCL 50UP130 best suited for?
Because of TCLs clever integration with Roku, this TV is perfect for casually watching all of your streaming favorites.
Serious cinephiles who demand the best quality picture will want to upgrade to a TV with a better contrast.
Pros
  • Roku integration
  • Excellent price
Cons
  • Low contrast
VIZIO M50-C1
VIZIOs M series was CNETs highest rated TV of 2015.
And what has changed between 2015 and 2016?
Not much.
The M series is still a rock star in the TV market and sets the standard for others.
The M50-C1 goes above and beyond when it comes to producing an amazing picture and it doesn’t disappoint.
Specs
  • Screen size: 50 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Backlight technology: LED
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz real, 120Hz Effective Refresh Rate
  • Inputs: 5 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Component, 1 Composite, 1 Cable TV, 1 ethernet
  • Model year: 2015
Features
The VIZIO M50-C1 has an incredible 4K Ultra High Definition display.
The M50-C1 also has VIZIOs smart upscaling technology.
This technology upconverts lower resolution images (like DVDs) to 4K.
Of course, it’s not true 4K, that would be impossible, but 1080p images look better on the M50-C1 than on a native 1080p screen because of the upscaling.
Most TVs on the market today are LED displays but they are not all created equal.
While most have 8, 12, or 16 active LED zones, the M50-C1 has a whopping 32 active LED zones.
This creates a more uniform image and a picture with deeper blacks and brighter whites.
The M series really stands out when displayed next to other similar TVs.
The VIZIO M50-C1 has a refresh rate of 60Hz.
It also has a 6 core processor and a bunch of clever technology to help reduce motion blur and show clear moving images.
Despite these technologies the M50-C1 does still have a slight problem with motion blur.
This is mostly just an unfortunate fact of 4K displays today.
The technology doesn’t yet exist to show 4K at a higher rate than 60Hz.
The good news is that most uses for this TV will be unaffected by motion blur.
Only hardcore PC gamers might notice a problem.
The VIZIO M50-C1 is a smart TV with VIZIOs smart TV interface that most people are familiar with.
You can download loads of apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO and many others.
We wish they included a native browser so that you could really put that QWERTY keyboard on the back of the remote to work.
The M50-C1 has built in dual band wifi so you can easily connect and stream your movies.
We recommend hard-wiring the TV to your router using an ethernet cable in order to get a better image on that sweet 4K display.
What is the VIZIO M50-C1 best suited for?
Because of the M50-C1s excellent picture quality, we think that this TV is best fit for an eye popping cinematic experience.
Use this TV in your home theater room and you won’t be disappointed.
Because of the motion blur issues the VIZIO M50-C1 may not be great for serious PC gamers.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Even and rich colors
Cons
  • Some motion blur
Now Take A Walk On The Even Wilder Side With Our Top 3 Best 60 Inch TVs
Samsung UN60KU6300
The Samsung UN60KU6300 is beautiful and thin (don’t we all wish we were?).
It also produces about one of the best pictures you can find for right around $1,000.
The KU6300 series of TVs are well known for their excellent contrast and black uniformity.
While some TVs have lighter areas of the screen, the UN60KU6300 produces an image with uniform brightness.
This kind of lifelike imaging is only found on much pricier OLED TVs.
Specs
  • Screen size: 60 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD
  • Backlight technology: LED
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz real, 120Hz Motion rate
  • Inputs: 3 HDMI, 3 USB, 1 Component, 1 Composite, 1 Cable TV, 1 ethernet
  • Model year: 2016
Features
At a screen size of 60 inches, this TV is much bigger than most.
The large screen makes this TV perfect for a theater room.
Also precision gamers will appreciate such a large screen so that you can nail those no-scope headshots.
No 60 inch screen is complete without 4K Ultra High Definition resolution.
4K UHD screens have a tremendous number of pixels and it makes this TV look ultra sharp.
For reference, most movies shown on digital projectors at your local cineplex are shown in 4K resolution.
So with a 4K TV you are essentially getting a movie theater in your living room.
The LED technology that Samsung uses in the UN60KU6300 is truly top of the line.
With their UHD dimming technology they are able to make the backlighting on this screen almost completely uniform.
This means no cloudy brightness around the edges of the screen.
It also means that the blacks on this screen are very deep as well as the whites being bright.
The image that this screen produces might be the best in it's price point and size.
The technology that Samsung uses to make this screen look so good has an unfortunate side effect, a narrow viewing angle.
When you view this screen from the side you lose a lot of the contrast and deep colors that you get when viewed head on.
This means that this TV may not be suited for large gathering areas where people will be watching from a steep angle.
As with nearly all 4K TVs, the Samsung UN60KU6300 has a 60Hz refresh rate.
Samsung uses some advanced technology to make the refresh rate appear faster and so they gave it a rating of 120 Motion Rate.
Motion Rate being their in house rating system.
Current generation HDMI cables actually cannot even send a 4K image that is faster than 60Hz, so the supporting technology has a ways to go before TV refresh rates need a boost.
This TV looks very crisp and the motion seems true to life.
That makes this TV great for live sports and gaming.
The Samsung UN60KU6300 is a smart TV so you can watch Netflix, YouTube or any other app directly on the TV.
Samsung even has their own internet browser so you can surf the web right on the TV.
Don’t try to type using the on-screen keyboard and remote though.
Typing using that directional pad can be somewhat frustrating.
I recommend plugging a physical keyboard into one of the USB ports.
This will give you full typing ability for the browser or for searching Netflix.
If you want to stream 4K over the internet be sure to utilize the ethernet port on this TV.
Wifi can’t handle true 4K video quite yet.
What is the Samsung UN60KU6300 best suited for?
This TV is great for use as a gaming screen or for watching epic movies.
Thanks to it’s screen size, the Samsung UN60KU6300 turns movies into a cinematic experience as well as making gaming a precision sport.
Pros
  • Excellent  picture quality
  • Large screen
Cons
  • Narrow viewing angle
Samsung UN60KS8000
In characteristic fashion Samsung is well ahead of the competition in creating great products.
This is especially true with its 8 series SUHD TVs.
You'll find that the 8 series is a masterful piece of entertainment technology, bursting with features and that typical Samsung class.
Specs
  • Screen size: 60 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD HDR (High Dynamic Range)
  • Backlight technology: Edge lit LED
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz
  • Inputs: 4 HDMI, 3 USB, 1 ethernet, 1 cable
  • Model year: 2016
Features
Samsung says the UN60KS8000 has an SUHD display.
What does the “S” stand for, you ask? Uhh… Nothing actually.
“S” is just something that Samsung slaps on their high end products to let you know how special it is, like the Galaxy line of smartphones.
But you can imaging that the “S” stands for “super” if you want to because this TV is indeed “super”.
The resolution on the Samsung UN60KS8000 is 4K UHD and uses HDR technology to really impress viewers.
HDR (or High Dynamic Range) is a newer technology that allows the screen to show more details in the brighter and darker areas as well as show a wider range of colors.
This isn’t just a marketing gimmick, HDR is a real thing that enhances the image compared to plain old LED TVs.
The image on this TV is unmatched by other LEDs you will find.
Only when you start looking at OLEDs will you find a better picture.
Unfortunately one side effect of the technology that creates such a great picture is a more narrow viewing angle.
So this TV may not be the best option for viewing in large groups with people watching the screen from the side.
The refresh rate on this TV is a very sharp 120Hz.
This means that you get less motion blur so you can cleanly see the action on the screen.
You may only notice a difference in intense action sequences like live sports, video games, or those shaky cam movies.
The refresh rate is one of the best reasons to spend a little more money on a current generation TV.
The Samsung UN60KS8000 is a wifi enable smart TV.
You can easily access your favorite apps like Netflix and HBO GO while online.
Be sure to have a strong, fast connection.
We recommend that you use ethernet to connect directly to your router so you don’t miss out on any of those sweet sweet pixels.
One positive smart feature on the UN60KS8000 is the web browser built into the operating system.
You can search the web right on your TV, and thanks to bluetooth you can even connect a wireless keyboard to make surfing easier.
What is the Samsung UN60KS8000 best suited for?
The Samsung UN60KS8000 is a great all around TV.
The excellent picture and high refresh rate means that this TV works just as well for gaming and live sports as it does for serious movies and Netflix binging.
Just be careful of the viewing angle.
You may not want to use this TV in a room with seating off to the sides where the viewing angle is steep.
Pros
  • Amazing picture
  • Excellent motion display
Cons
  • Narrow viewing angle
LG 60UH8500
LG is a high end brand just like Samsung and is actually the world’s second largest manufacturer of large screen TVs.
LG is a company that focuses on performance as well as design where they are known for not following the crowd. The 60UH8500 is no exception.
Unlike most large LEDs on the market the LG 60UH8500 has a colored bezel and white (yes, white!) back.
While most TVs nowadays all look like identical black rectangles, LG has made a fashion piece.
Specs
  • Screen size: 60 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD HDR (High Dynamic Range)
  • 3D capable: Yes
  • Backlight technology: Edge lit LED
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz
  • Inputs: 3 HDMI, 3 USB, 1 composite, 1 component, 1 ethernet, 1 cable, 1 RS232C
  • Model year: 2016
Features
The large 60 inch screen on the LG 60UH8500 is capable of displaying images in 4k UHD resolution.
It’s basically like having a movie theater in your own home.
Given how bad the 2016 movie season has been, a home theater might soon be a necessity.
4K is four times the resolution of 1080p and is also four times as mind blowing.
The 60UH8500 also uses a technology called HDR (or High Dynamic Range).
This technology has been used by professional photographers for years now and is currently making it's way into high end displays.
The technology essentially gives you more colors as well as brighter whites and darker blacks.
Where HDR really makes a difference is in showing detail in bright and dark areas.
On a standard TV a shot of the sky might just look completely washed out or a shadowy area might look completely dark.
On an HDR TV you can actually see the details in the clouds in the previously washed out sky and you can also see the details of what is lurking in the shadows.
HDR is yet another feature that makes an image more lifelike.
The LG 60UH8500 uses edge lit LEDs as it's backlighting technology of choice.
This helps to make the TV thinner and lighter.
Unfortunately using edge lighting hurts the performance in low light.
This TV might not be the best choice for a dedicated movie room where you watch movies with the lights off.
With a 120Hz refresh rate, the LG 60UH8500 displays sharp motion.
The LG is a step above most 4K TVs on the market today which usually can only display 60Hz.
Having twice the refresh rate of a normal UHD TV gives the 60UH8500 an advantage in displaying live sports, video games, and fast paced action sequences.
A high refresh rate means less motion blur and an easier to see image.
If you want to be able to spot a football flying towards the end zone or if you want to no scope a noob with precision then the LG 60UH8500 might be what you’re looking for.
LG has a beautiful user interface with its smart TVs.
It is very sleek and modern in a way that stands out from other brands.
Of course the 60UH8500 is wifi capable and can connect to your favorite streaming apps, but we recommend connecting via ethernet directly to your router.
One neat feature about this smart TV is what LG calls it’s “magic remote”.
The magic remote essentially functions like a Wii remote.
You can point the remote at the TV and move the cursor around by aiming.
It is neat but I don’t think this is how smart TVs will function in the future.
Unmentioned almost anywhere is the fact that this TV is 3D capable.
LG doesn’t seem to want to advertise that it has this capability because it can’t be found on the box or even on the website.
Many people who buy this TV will likely be surprised to see that it comes with two 3D glasses.
Who knows why LG has hid this feature but we’re glad it has it.
While I’m no fan of 3D movies, I would rather have the ability to watch one if I ever felt in the mood to do so.
LG is also thankfully ignoring the trend of using split leg stands.
While buying a new TV can be exciting, it can also be frustrating if you think you might have to buy new furniture just to fit your TVs extra wide legs.
The LG 60UH8500 has a center mounted stand that will fit the furniture that your current TV already sits on.
What is the LG 60UH8500 best suited for?
The LG 60UH8500 is a great TV for the living room.
Because of it's trend setting design it will look amazing out on display.
Also because of the TVs wide viewing angle the 60UH8500 is great for a large room and for viewing in large groups.
The edge lit display means that this TV might not be best for watching dark movies in a dark room
Pros
  • Amazing picture
  • Beautiful design
  • Great display of motion
Cons
  • Poor low light performance
And A Must-Have 65 Inch TV Tossed In For Good Measure  {{{{{{chuckle}}}}}}
Sony XBR65X850D
Sony is long known for their quality products.
You might compare them to the Mercedez-Benz of the electronics industry.
Their line of smart TVs carries on the Sony tradition of excellence in a beautiful way.
Not only does the X850D series display a beautiful image, but the TV itself is also a work of art.
Specs
  • Screen size: 65 inches
  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD HDR (High Dynamic Range)
  • Backlight technology: Edge lit LED
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz
  • Inputs: 4 HDMI, 3 USB, 1 Component, 2 Composite, 1 ethernet, 1 cable
  • Model year: 2016
Features
The Sony XBR65X850D sports a huge 65 inch 4K UHD display.
With a screen this size you should only consider a 4K display.
1080p at 65 inches will give you a noticeable screen door effect (when you can see the individual pixels), but with the advanced 4K resolution this screen is crisp and clear.
This TV also uses the amazing HDR technology.
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and means that you get a much richer color palette with over 1 billion colors. HDR really does make a difference over standard LED screens in.
You get much better detail in the brights and a wider range of colors overall.
This and most other Sonys on the market use edge lit LEDs as their backlighting technology.
With edge lighting Sony is able to achieve incredibly thin TVs.
The screen on this TV is only about as thick as my finger, which is mind blowing to see.
The only thick part is near the base of the TV where the inputs, speakers, and stand is.
Despite how thin the TV is it still feels solid.
Unfortunately, because of the edge lighting the TV doesn’t have as high of a contrast as it otherwise could.
You may notice this if you are watching a dark movie in a dark room.
The TV works great for regular living room use though and the contrast isn’t an issue there.
The Sony XBR65X850D has a notably high refresh rate for a 4K TV.
I have said before that most 4K TVs are only 60Hz, and that is true.
Only when you get to the higher end 4K TVs do the refresh rates start to rise.
Well, this is one of those TVs.
With a 120Hz refresh rate the XBR65X850D displays crystal clear motion.
Sports gurus and gamers will appreciate the excellent motion on such a high resolution display.
Like all new high end TVs the Sony XBR65X850D is a smart TV, but it is a bit different than others on the market.
Sony and Sharp have outsourced their TV operating systems to Google. Android TV is a newish product from the famous silicon valley company and it’s not hard to understand it’s benefits.
Android has highly skilled engineers and designers that have spent years refining the Android user experience into the most widely used mobile platform on the planet.
So why have a clunky smart TV OS that was slapped together quickly by some in house designers when you can literally have Android on your TV?
It seems like an obvious decision and I hope other TV manufacturers follow Sony’s lead on this.
Another feature that sets this TV apart from others on the market is actually the TV stand.
While most other brands have gone for the split leg design, Sony has stuck with the center stand and I appreciate that.
Having a center stand means that you only need a TV table that is as wide as the stand.
With the split leg designs that are so popular now many people are forced to buy extra wide TV tables in order fit the wide legs.
Not so with the Sony! Keep your old furniture and save yourself some money!
What is the Sony XBR65X850D best suited for?
The high refresh rate and excellent picture make this an excellent TV for gaming or for live sports.
It's also well suited to be placed in the middle of the living room because of it's large screen and beautiful design.
Because of the low contrast, the XBR65X850D may not be the best choice for a dedicated home theater TV.
Pros
  • Great picture
  • Excellent motion display
  • Android TV interface
  • Gorgeous design
Cons
  • Low contrast
The Evolution of TV:
From Ugly Box To Guilty Pleasure
We have so much to tell you -
But first.............watch this great video about what TV was like in the dinosaur days.
It’s actually an ad for a local cable company but is one of the best yesteryear "Remember what TV used to be like?" flashback descriptions we’ve ever seen.
Back in the good ol' days, when I was a kid, TVs were bulky and unsightly.
But that didn’t matter one lick – in fact, we didn’t think about that at all because what happened when you turned on this ugly box was wondrous.
Incredible.
Unimaginable.
Or as we say in Boston, "Wicked awesome!"
Lively westerns, fun cartoons and enthralling TV shows came tumbling through.
We sat wide-eyed until dinner and then promptly went back directly afterwards.
When you think about what went into making a TV in those days, it’s a brain-itch.
Wood, metal, brass, veneers, glass and several other sundry materials were needed.
Not to mention the labor and sub-par assembly lines.
b50it
I remember the times our set was not working, we called “the TV man”.
He arrived at our house a few hours later with a black suitcase filled with the most colorful thinga-ma-jigs, aptly named “tubes”.
He would fix the TV set and my mother would pay him the hefty sum of $1.50 and all would be right again.
b50it
We had the 14 inch ugly box for quite a while but some people were well-off enough to buy what was called a “console”.
Still an ugly box, but much bigger and was considered a piece of furniture.
The ugly box was set inside of a cabinet, giving it a sleek and stylish look.
These sets were kind of garish, with ornamental edging and trim.
Some of them had doors in the front so you could close away the ugly box when it wasn’t being used.
You could decorate it with a fruit bowl, a vase, a lamp or even an array of magazines, just as you would a side table.
b50it
Because TVs were rather expensive back then, right around $129 for a tabletop black and white model and $1,100 for a console, not everyone had one.
To really get a good idea of affordability, the average monthly salary back in 1955 was about $260.
Every night our neighbors would gather at our house to watch Phil Silvers, Jack Benny and The Texaco Star Theatre.
b50it
It was not considered an imposition at all.
We felt very lucky and very important to be the chosen household where everyone wanted to meet.
Back then, despite how unsightly they look to us today, we did try to match those ugly boxes with our interior design and surroundings.
best 50 inch tv
By the time we were able to afford a console set, they had improved the overall look -- just enough so that we didn't feel the need to hide it when not in use.
And there was almost always a fake drawer at the bottom with a keyhole and a handle in the middle.
I used to lie in front of the TV and try to open the drawer with my toes while watching Captain Kangaroo.
Today TVs pretty much all look alike.
Made up of screen only, they are the focal point of our room but no one ever tries to match it to their décor.
Screen size is more or less a reflection of the family’s affluence, so it is almost never hidden away like the ugly box was.
No matter what kind of TV you had, sometime after midnight, an announcer came on to let you know that broadcasting was finished for the day.
test pattern
The national anthem would play against an American flag waving in the breeze and then finally the test pattern, made up of thick, vertical stripes of black and white (color, if you were lucky enough to have a color set) would be the last image you would see in the ugly box.
How do I know?
Every once in a while, my Dad would let me stay up with him to watch The Tonight Show starring Jack Paar.
Then something incredible happened.
It was almost as popular as the space program.
The remote control.
Yes, folks – 1955 was the year and the Zenith Corporation was the creator of the true wireless remote control, trailing a few other attempts by Zenith starting in 1951.
Color TV had only been around since 1954 and color programming content was extremely scarce, so the remote control was the hit of the times.
In 1961, RCA Victor proudly presented their color TV, equipped with their state-of-the-art wireless remote control.
Watch the timeless video below to see the first advertisement.
Notice how big this remote is.
Brings back memories of the first mobile phones!
Or "brick" phones, as we used to call them. {{{chuckle}}}
10 Things You Should Know Before Buying Your Next TV
Introduction
TV buyers can be broken up into two groups, whether shopping onsite or online:
#1) Those who want to get in and get out fast – “Screen size and price, please”
#2) Those who spend some extra time making sure they get the most bang for their buck (I love that phrase)
We've added a group that you might say belongs somewhere in the middle.
Not too simple, yet not too technical. "Just right", as the baby bear said.
So much has changed in the past few years and TVs come with so many different options that between aspect ratio and refresh rate, it’s really easy to get confused and stay that way throughout the buying experience.
So, what in hell’s bathroom do you do?
How do you muddle through all of the variables involved to actually get the best deal when you don’t know what most of it means?
Well, we’ve rounded up the most important facets you need to look at – right here.
You’ll be fully prepared for the fun part -- choosing!
b50it
Keep in mind that unlike most of the other review sites, our recommendations are all sold as new -- not used or refurbished.
Back to our current-day shoppers.
Truly, what we’ve found through the years, is that the majority of shoppers are overwhelmed with too many technicalities.
However, most electronics come with a level of complexity so again - what’s a consumer to do?
We think you'll agree that we just want to get the thing delivered and set-up quickly, efficiently and without having to refinance the house.
b50it
But bottom-line is, we want to love it.
Totally.
We want to enjoy TV activities like never before.
And let’s face it, we also want to show it off like a trophy.
Well, as it turns out, there is a way for you to get it for a great price, set it up easily and love it.
As consumers ourselves, we’ve felt the frustration and the indecision.
This is why we’ve put this list together.
This is a resource that will be of extreme value to you in terms of what’s important and what’s just fluff and confusion.
Before we begin, just a word of caution:
b50it
And........we can't emphasize this enough:
Stay away from extended warranties of any kind.
Wasted money!
Check with your credit card company. Almost all of them offer some type of extended protection.
10 Things You Need To Know
1. Screen Size
Before we get into this fun topic, remember that screens are measured on the diagonal.
Typically, the further the distance from the screen, the bigger the screen should be.
But there’s always the general rule that smaller rooms, such as bedrooms will use anywhere from a 25” – 32” screen.
The typical perspective for approximating the most comfortable screen size and seating distance is:
Distance from TV to seating area divided by 1.6. = Screen measurement (diagonal)
OR
Screen measurement (diagonal) x 1.6 = Distance from seating area to TV
Examples:
96 inches from TV to seating area div by 1.6 = 60 inch screen size
OR
50 inch screen size x 1.6 = 80 inch distance from seating area to TV
A lot of this mumbo-jumbo screen size stuff can be solved by using common sense.
Your main TV will probably run a little bigger, no matter what the distance source is (typically 50” – 65”).
best 50 inch tv
Remember that TV diagonals run anywhere from 20” – 90”, but in fact, the most TVs sold fall somewhere in the middle of this range.......
which is why we're featuring the best 50 inch TV. This size has shown itself to be the most popular.
Keep in mind that you’ll choose something bigger for a really spacious area.
As I stated earlier, common-sense, folks!
Actually, size can be increased if you’re looking to get a 4K or a UHD (higher resolution) set.
Because the pixels are more densely packed together, you can actually sit closer than the rule of thumb in order to have a relaxed and satisfying view.
Example:
Screen size = Distance from TV to seating area
(55 inch screen = approximately 4- 1/2  feet seating distance from screen)
However, remember to find your happy-medium in order to get the most out of your phenomenal, brilliant new TV.
Try out different scenarios involving size and see which one makes your heart sing the most.
b50it
Your finances will most likely come into play when purchasing your awesome new TV.
However, because of sites like this one, you can get a great bargain and at the end of the day know that you really did get
"more bling for less cha-ching"!
With so many options, variables and features available, we’re along for the ride to help make this fun, not heartbreaking.
2. Display Types
Ok, now that you’ve chosen your screen size, the next thing to think about is what kind of TV you have a hankerin’ for.
LCD
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TVs are fairly prevalent and are normally less expensive.
Energy efficient, they come with rich color.
For uncomplicated tasks such as basic TV watching, it’s fine.
FYI, seating should be limited to straight angles rather than sitting to the sides of the TV.
Other than that, undoubtedly a great picture.
However, if something a bit more arduous, such as gaming is your pleasure, it will more than likely leave you frustrated from an incomplete frame-rate.
best 50 inch tv
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

LED

LED TVs are nothing more than a type of LCD TV.

They use what’s known as an LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlight for the liquid crystals in the display, instead of CCFLs or Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps.

“Local Dimming”, as it’s called, dominates in terms of contrast ratio.

On top of that, LED TVs are 20% more power-efficient than LCDs.

But there’s almost always a price to pay, isn’t there?

Yup………and this one is in dollars.

LED backlighting greatly enhances contrast, color and all-around visual effects.

When first executed, it was called an LED-Backlit LCD TV.

Inevitably, it was shortened to just LED.

There are two types of Local Dimming:

  • Edge-lit TVs have LEDs only along the sides of the TV’s back panel, charged with illuminating the whole screen
  • Direct-lit (or Full-array) means there are LEDs covering the entire back of a TV’s LCD panel. Direct-lit noticeably has the advantage over edge-lit.
best 50 inch tv

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OLED
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs are different from LCD TVs, in that they use colored LED lighting to form the image.
They are somewhat energy efficient but not as much as LEDs.
Known for a kick-ass picture that is especially bright, it’s ideal to watch during the daylight hours, when there could be glare problems otherwise.
High contrast ratios will enhance your experience, making it a cinematic wonder.
Again, there’s almost always a price to pay for the good stuff.
Yup……..again, it’s unfortunately in dollars.
And even more than the typical LED-LCD.
They also may include some of the LCD side-angle viewing issues.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Plasma

Goodbye Plasma TVs!

best 50 inch tv

Plasma TVs, sadly, have slowly been phased out, although you can still get one of the older models [brand-new-still-in-box].

The only problem is that they are at a premium right now, so you’ll pay thousands for something that cost several hundred just a few short years ago.

Why? Because Plasma TVs were the closest we had ever come to TV utopia.

That is, until 4k resolution came along and spoiled the fun.

Plasma TV Features

o High contrast ratio

o 600Hz refresh rate which essentially gets rid of motion blur for watching sports, movies and playing video games

o Color quality

o No angle viewing issues, allowing a group of people to sit around the screen and still be able to enjoy a clear, concise image without skewed color or picture

o Pure cinematic enjoyment

o Affordable price

A Panasonic USA senior employee, known by the username “avjunkie”, who makes his/her comments solely on the infamous HighDefJunkies forum said this:

“The main reason we have to move on is technology hit a roadblock. We simply cannot make a 4k plasma in a reasonable manner for retail without significant investment…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Resolution
b50it
HDTV has higher resolution than the older analog sets: 1280×720 pixels or 1920×1080 versus 720×480 pixels.
This subsequently results in crystal-clear, sharp imaging, more detail and bigger than life-like action.
Digital transmission needs less capacity, by reason of what’s called digital video compression.
One-third wider than traditional TV screens, HDTV will sharply match the peripheral vision spectrum of the human eye, resulting in a more realistic viewing experience.
HD/HighDef = 720p = (1280×720)
FHD/Full HighDef = 1080p = (1920×1080)
4k UHD/Ultra HighDef = 2160p = (3840x2160)
It’s obvious that you should probably stay away from anything less than 1080p.
Now, if you really want to ensure that your TV will survive the test of time and high-tech, consider a 4K Ultra HD TV.
You can sit closer to the screen and still drench yourself in the magic that is movie bliss.
Keep in mind that there’s a ton of skinny out there right now regarding the 4K and it’s really big, folks.
Rather than the standard measurement of vertical pixels, the 4K counts horizontally.
There seems to be some buzz among consumers that waiting another year or two before making this investment may not be a bad idea.
Seeing that content to watch on a 4K is at a minimum and prices are fairly high, maybe wait for more content and lower prices?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. Contrast Ratio

According to Wikipedia:

best 50 inch tv

Contrast ratio is a property of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminescence of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable of producing. A high contrast ratio is a desired aspect of any display.”

A low contrast ratio will produce a dull gray where the blackest areas of an image should be.

A lack of vividness will result where really bright areas should be.

Higher ratios allow for dynamic shadow elements.

The higher the ratio, the better, although speculative.

You see, manufacturers play with these numbers and will either throw around specs that make their TVs look good, or not publish their numbers at all.

This is why you’ll often see n/a listed in the contrast field.

The easiest way to tell is by how the TV is advertised.

If the contrast ratio is put out there as “dynamic”, its numbers are probably skewed.

If “true” or “native”, the numbers are more likely to be closer to the truth counter, with bona-fide, comparable specs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. Color
b50it
For newfangled models, look for something that is HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatible.
You’ll get true-to-life colors and a TV experience that absolutely saturates you with what’s happening.
Now, if you’re cruising for the cheapest deal out there, just make sure you’re getting at least a “bit depth” of 8 bits per channel.
This will ensure that the TV is able to construct enough colors to delight the human eye and bring out photo-authentic images, rather than cartoonish illustrations and backgrounds.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

6. Aspect Ratio

b50it

This is the ratio of the width to height of the TV screen.

It has nothing to do with picture quality or resolution.

It has to do with how whatever you are watching fits on the screen itself.

It’s a matter of what you’ll be watching most.

Typically, movies are the most popular in terms of genre and 16:9 will do you just fine.

This happens to be the most typical aspect ratio for the widescreen HDTV classes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7. Refresh Rate
b50it
It has been pointed out by some experts that you shouldn’t buy anything with a refresh rate of less than 120 Hz.
Also known as anti-blur technology, the jury is still out on this and the debate appears to be ongoing.
Measured in hertz, the refresh rate reflects how many times the image is refreshed (per second).
Most common rates are 60Hz, 120Hz and sometimes 240Hz.
The higher the rate, the lower the motion-blur, and the more fluid the movement between images.
Great for action movies, as well as most gaming situations.
I said I wasn’t going to get too technical, and I fear that that ship may have sailed already in some of this content.
However, the topic of refresh rate has more levels than I care to elaborate on in this blog.
I really doubt that any of you are interested in the deep, dark technicalities of interpolation and the fact that the TV’s refresh rate should be evenly divisible by the frame-rate of the content going in.
Now, if I’m to be punished for not covering this thoroughly enough, I’ll take my licks but I’m sure I’ll survive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

8. Inputs/Input Lag

Inputs

b50it

Game console, computer and Blu-ray players will need to be connected to the TV via HDMI or display port inputs.

For older DVD players or VCRs, make sure the set has analog composite inputs, although adapters are sometimes available, so don’t cross it off your list just for that reason.

A cable box will require a coaxial cable input.

If you’ll be connecting anything that uses HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection), such as a Blu-ray player, you’ll want to make sure that your TV also utilizes HDCP.

Don’t worry too much about the above input requirements, as most TVs sold today are well-equipped for your needs and will let you know in the description if there are limitations.

Input Lag

b50it

This is of distinct importance for those in the throes of gaming.

Input lag is the time gap between a specific input cable going into the TV and the TV actually forming the image on the screen.

The longer the gap, the further “trailing behind” the screen action is, from the actual action in the game.

Your controls may not respond the way you want them to and thus, a longer lag-time can make for extremely frustrating game-play, especially in an otherwise fast-moving game.

With this in mind, for the gaming community, shorter lag-times are critical.

Most TVs that have gaming in mind will include an exclusive gaming process that can correct any type of lag that may come your way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9. Sound
b50it
Believe it or not, after lots of research, I don’t have much to report.
The experts all seem to agree that TV speakers are of poor quality these days because the screens are thinner.
It makes sense when you think about it, however, how can you possibly have this ridiculously amazing TV and not have even half-decent sound?
Come on!
Solution?
Buy a soundbar.
They’re fairly cheap and will knock you off the counter-top you were sitting on and out onto the deck in the time it takes you to say, “Are you kidding me?”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

10. Miscellaneous

3D

There are many TVs available today that include 3D capability, and arrive at your door equipped with the infamous 3D glasses.

b50it

The problem is that there isn’t enough 3D TV content to satisfy the masses.

There are a couple hundred 3D Blu-ray sources out there, however, there are thousands and thousands of 2D Blu-ray titles.

On-demand 3D cable and satellite choices are slim and as fast as a 3D channel is added, another one is taken away.

best 50 inch tv

ESPN 3D, the largest 3D content available  in years past, was phased out in 2013 because of viewer disinterest in accepting 3D into the home.

However, the 3D TV feature is still being offered.

Now, if it were me, I would definitely make it a point to try to hook it as an added ingredient in my next TV, if it didn’t make too much difference in the price.

But it is a matter of preference so you’ll either rule it out or cave-in and opt for the challenge.

Either way, the best source for the simplest, easy to understand information is Amazon’s 3D TV guide.

Curved Screen

The shape of the screen, whether flat or curved does not a better picture make.

best 50 inch tv

If there is any improvement in image viewing, it will indeed be small and only with the larger screen diagonals.

Our opinion?

It’s a status thing.

A fashion choice.

A suck-you-in-one-last-time thing.

So, if you want one, great, but don’t expect it to make your visual much better than something that’s $300 - $400 less.

Internet Ready

This means exactly what it says.

best 50 inch tv

This TV comes all ready to connect to that great world-wide-web.

Either via Ethernet cable HDMI or built-in wi-fi. Depending on the manufacturer, content will vary.

Some provide Netflix, Amazon and YouTube, but some include many other choices as well.

Remember, though, that most TVs have the ability to connect to the Internet via Blu-ray player, Internet ready or not.

DLNA

DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a collaboration of the leading consumer electronics, PC and mobile enterprises.

best 50 inch tv

DLNA has produced design protocol for a new era of products, which allows them to work as a compatible unit, despite the brand.

The process allows you to remotely access your PC’s personal media so that you can download music, video, and photos and then enjoy them anywhere in the home where the TV resides.

Gorilla Glass™

Created by Corning, Inc., Sony uses Gorilla Glass on their more exclusive TVs as a protection against screen damage, both during shipping as well as in the home. This tempered glass can also contribute to a nicer picture overall.

To Sum Up

Yo! First, we'd like to thank you for shopping on our site.

We absolutely, ridiculously love what we do.

And we want you to keep coming back because we love you, too.

Back to topic: The TV is such an essential part of our lives.

It’s no longer a frivolity – it’s a necessity.

Oh ya.

Really, can you think of anything that can outdo the TV when it comes to significance in our lives?

It has such far-reaching capabilities nowadays.

You can tell who’s calling on the telephone without leaving your seat, just by looking at the bottom of your screen, because your TV and your telephone come through your cable company.

You can see who’s at your front door by connecting your security system.

Your gaming system?

As my Boston-Italian friends would say, "Forget about it."

You now live in a world of virtual reality, 3D and special effects.

No nightmares here.

Your TV is your computer monitor and pulling up that all-important analysis report is just a click away.

You can surf the Internet.

b50it

You can binge-watch Game Of Thrones.

How great is that?

You can catch all the Dick VanDyke, Andy Griffith and Three Stooges reruns you want.

Black and white movies from the 40s?

No problem.

Fred Astaire and Clark Gable and Kathryn Hepburn are alive and well.

New releases are conveniently on tap, as well as that delicious foreign ale in the keg right next to this brand spankin’ new TV.

Oh man, how many uses can a TV have?

See, this is why it’s just indispensable.

It’s a non-negotiable, ka-ray-zee addition to your home.

And don’t you forget it.

Time To Decide!

man thinking

Come on.......You know you want one! You deserve it!

Although it is ultimately your decision, be cautious of which retailer you choose.

You never want to be disappointed with your purchase or get caught up in the many facets of the buying process that go with it.

Remember, this is supposed to be fun.

Enough jibber-jabber......now, choose!

Cheap Gaming Chairs – What’s The Catch?

Obviously, you want the most bang for your buck.

Well, this is where it gets interesting.

You don’t have to spend a lot.

You can still get the same thrill it was meant for without a cup holder or leather upholstery.

However, “cheap” is a dysfunctional word.

“You get what you pay for” is unfortunately what you’re left with when cheap trumps sensibility.

We will never recommend that you buy something just because it only costs a ‘dime’.

That would be unfair to you as a consumer.....

You see, we believe, mainly from our own experience, that “cheap” frequently equals “crappy”.

Crappy = Unhappy

In addition, you run the risk of looking like a noob to all of your gaming peeps.

You’ve already spent a nice chunk of change on your video game collection and you want to compliment that with something snazzy.

Not to mention the seriousness of good posture that we discussed earlier.

cgc

Sometimes it’s just better to pay a few extra bucks and be deliriously happy (and healthy) with your decision, rather than buying something that will fall out of the sky dead.

{{{Chuckle}}}

If you’re indeed serious about cost in relation to the benefits you get in return, then you're a smart shopper!

The Best Cheap Gaming Chairs

It’s pretty much guaranteed that once you’ve actually used your special new perch, you won’t ever go back to the sofa, or whatever former resting place was supporting your little tush.

It’s like flying first class.

After that, you look at coach in a whole different light.

And yes, I am referring to an old Seinfeld episode.

That said, do you want something that will last a fair amount of time or are you willing to keep buying a new one every year because your inexpensive choices quickly become inadequate, obsolete or worse – dead as a door nail?

Or are you actually brave enough to get really wacky and go “extreme”?

So, when gamers ask “What are the best, yet cheapest gaming chairs?”, they’re really embarking on yet another quest:

Searching for the best product for the cheapest price. Certainly nothing wrong with that.

Chairs For Gaming --
What's All The Hoopla About?

Chairs for gaming are all the rage now. People spend billions of dollars every year on gaming and the novelty doesn’t look like it’s going to decline anytime soon.

“Wish list” and “Save For Later” bookmarks these days are mainly filled with video games, gaming devices, peripherals and components.

So what's all the hype about? Read on.......

Really cool for intensely immersing yourself in a movie, music or video game-play.

Depending on your budget and your individual style, some models are dressed-up with all kinds of extras, including head cushions, leather upholstery and cup-holders (yes, beverages are no longer optional when gaming).

All snoodled up in your own personal cocoon, you’re more likely to perform at optimum levels than if you’re just sitting squarely (yes, that’s definitely a pun) on a sofa or regular chair.

Most are equipped with vibration syncing so that every blast, every gunshot, every tire screech is felt – as if you were literally a part of the game.

But you already know this, right?

You’re thinking, “Do I have to pay a king’s ransom to get this great feature?”

cgc

Answer = “No.”

However, with comfort and higher performance in mind, gaming chairs have always carried a bit of a stigma with them.

They’ve been labeled as foolish and lavish contraptions for entitled, spoiled showoffs.

In other words, a complete waste of money.

This couldn't be further from the truth.  Read on............

New studies have uncovered some critical medical developments that can arise from gaming.

The experts agree that anyone who engages in this pastime should employ all necessary measures to reduce physical strain on the body.

It's been said that gaming without proper posture consideration is like motorcycle racing without a helmet.

You Worked Some Overtime And Now, Yippee-Ki-Yay, You're Getting A Gaming Chair!

Shopping, browsing, perusing, looking around, surfin’ the ‘net. We can quibble what to call it but let’s face it, folks.......it quacks.

cgc

Online shopping is supposed to be easier. It's the preferred way to shop.

And that's why you've stopped here! We've done the work for you.

You want the best gaming chair available - one that will fit your situation, needs and style.

Maybe you’re a big guy (or gal).

Not every gaming chair can accommodate the large and lovely.

Or maybe you want something specifically for gaming at your PC.

Or what if you absolutely have to have wireless?

There’s always one specific feature that, if it’s not included, is a deal-breaker.

One thing we’ve learned about these chairs is that they all have bells and whistles.

Some have more, others less.

But they’re all designed to do one thing – make us comfortable.

From this, we get proper focus, optimum performance levels, strong attention span and ergonomic satisfaction.

The rest of the bling is just fluff.

The new AFM technology that ensures you’ll feel every synced vibration, volcanic eruption, earthquake rumble, grand theft auto collision and machine gun blast.

Speakers and subwoofers that could literally blow you out the front window.

And of course, as discussed earlier, your typical sundry extras, such as cup holders, wireless and Bluetooth, smoke machines and laser light displays.

Again, it all comes back to the one primary benefit every gaming chair is equipped to give us -comfort. All of the other benefits branch out from there.

There are so many different types of gaming chairs out there that it’s easy to get caught up in the hoopla and fun when you start browsing.

And while being happy as a pig in poop feels epic at first, it gets old really fast when you’re still chompin’ at the bit trying to decide which one to buy three weeks later.

Save yourself some time and take a look at what we’ve sourced out here for you.

These are the best of the best of the best.

So stop your hemming and hawing and just make up your mind for heaven's sake.

Imagine how fired up you’ll be as it gets closer to delivery day.

You’ll be glad you didn’t wait another minute!

Of course, comfort will always be your first priority. Exclusive, unique chairs for gaming activities were first invented because of the aches and pains that gamers were experiencing following long hours of game-play.

Who wouldn’t want to be all snoodled up in a relaxed position, while fighting the forces of evil?

A good chair will envelop you in a way that tranquilizes your body and mind to ensure optimum levels of game-play.

Oh, and there’s nothing juvenile about wanting to be comfortable.

In fact, real gamers know they have “arrived” when they finally start using one.

Focus

cgc

You can’t concentrate properly if your legs are sore or your back feels like a wookie is jogging in place on your spine.

You can barely hear the sounds over the kids fighting in the other room.

You may as well be dancing with yourself on a slippery rooftop.

Gaming mastery comes after much practice, long hours and being a very patient Padawan.

To perform at maximum capacity, focus and concentration are key.

You must have a skill-set that is acutely keen on all levels – eyesight, hearing, motor coordination, cognitive thinking, etc.

Your gaming chair will ensure your proficiency.

Health

Ergonomics used to be a word that was thrown around quite a bit.

cgc

However, it has been tested and medically proven that a pastime that renders you sedentary for long periods of time will indeed cause you physical injury if your posture is poor.

Bad posture has actually become one of the leading reasons that good chairs for gaming are more than necessary, as the cost of not using one can be exorbitantly high in the long run.

What Doctors Are Saying

cgc

The Number One Issue That A Gaming Chair Can Fix -- Posture!

Oh good grief. As I stated earlier, this one is probably the worst.

Before I started using a good gaming chair, I was so guilty of bad posture that I could have been the poster child.

One of the most common positions in the world of gaming is referred to as “totally immersed”.

Neck and head pitched forward, elbows or arms fixed on the knees, body inclining forward and eyes totally fixated on the screen.

Then there’s the body “slump” or “slouch”.

Exactly as it states, a gamer sits back on a regular sofa or chair.

Oftentimes with feet and legs elevated.

He/she thinks they are relaxed, when all the while they are actually crushing themselves.

Bursitis, disc complications, pinched nerves, orthopedic issues, migraines, digestion problems, impaired circulation, osteoarthritis……..and the list goes on and on, folks.

It’s no longer a secret that pinched nerve issues are the most common injuries within the gaming community.

More gamers have it than are willing to admit because it’s also known as the “nerd” injury.

cheap gaming chairs - chairs for gaming

Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon has referenced his “old Nintendo injury” (also known as nintendonitis), on several occasions and is seen wearing a very sophisticated brace during an event where button-pushing was expected to be extreme.

The best solution for posture issues is an ergonomically correct seating arrangement, most aptly called the “gaming chair”.

Why Should I Use A Gaming Chair? What's The Cost Of Not Using One?

There’s more to this fad than just extreme comfort, increased focus and real-time sensation.

People buy them for ergonomic well-being.

Back, shoulder and neck pain, digestive issues, migraine headaches and overall faulty circulation can arise from poor posture due to long periods of sitting.

I think the question we need to ask is “What’s the cost of not using a gaming chair?”.

We’d all like a gaming chair that doesn’t cost a fortune, but when making this decision it’s worthwhile to pay attention to the other kind of cost…..the cost to your health.

This fallout is very real and the price is almost always high.

Incorrect Seating

Correct Seating

So, believe it or not, a gaming chair is no longer a negotiable novelty.

It’s an absolute game changer (yep, another pun) and highly necessary for those of you who spend more than 30 minutes a day playing reality make-believe.

No, you’re not a self-indulgent jerk. Congrats – you’ve earned this trinket.

What Else Is Available To Keep Gamers
Safe From Injury?

Mouse

cgc

Working with a common computer mouse for a long period of time can cause your wrist to contort while attempting to alternately fire and move with index finger and thumb.

There are a myriad of ergonomic mouses (mice?) on the market, which will force your wrist to stabilize itself during game-play.

Keyboard

cgc

Holding your hand at a funky angle when using your keyboard action keys can cause wrist inflammation.

Incredibly, there are many keyboard solutions on hand that can solve your problems.

Game Controller

cgc

Continually pushing a specific button with your thumb will typically cause swelling at its base.

Specialty game controllers that ensure better coordination when ferociously fighting evil are now readily available.

What Are the Different Types Of Chairs For Gaming?

For all intents and purposes, there are several main types of gaming chairs or seating arrangements:

o Rocker

o Pedestal

o PC/Computer

Not only do you get a great gaming/racing chair, it will suffice in comfort as your office/desk chair as well.

o Racing/Flight Simulation

These are typically “chassis” or “cockpit” type setups, ready for steering wheel, foot pedals, dashboard and other simulation components. Click here to see some crazy tricked-out simulators.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to a gaming chair and one type is not better than the other, by any means.

It all comes down to what your personal preference is.

There are some pretty nice models out there that can deliver exactly what you need for just a small investment.

What About Gaming Chair Compatibility?

Most chairs for gaming can be used with all of the widely-used gaming consoles and platforms.

The manufacturer will let you know what it can be used with and what to stay away from.

Gaming consoles can be easily connected using wireless or Bluetooth or with the supplied cables.

Remember that if you want to hook it up to your PC or TV, the chair should have HDMI support.

cheap gaming chairs - chairs for gaming

Xbox One Gaming Chair: When it comes to gaming chairs, Xbox One compatibility seems to be the one people are asking about more often than most.

The worst scenario happens when you fall in love with a specific Xbox One gaming chair, work an added shift or two to save extra money and proudly click “Buy Now”, only to have it arrive and not work out.

Always double-check compatibility, to ensure there are no disappointed players when your chair finally arrives.

Most popular gaming consoles: Multiple forms of Playstation, Xbox, Wii.

PC/Computer [Video games/Online gaming]: These run on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

In a perfect world, you would choose a chair that is compatible with all of the preferred platforms, however, your main objective is to find one you love that works with your current Xbox One system and/or anything you may decide to buy in the near future.

Don’t take the whole process too seriously, however……..

As with any other purchase of this caliber, be smart, not complacent.

Do your homework by visiting sites like ours. (Actually, just visit our site. It would make us very happy.)

We have researched all of our featured gaming chairs and as always, we try to rate based on endorsements, evaluations and recommendations from consumers like you.

The Overall Skinny - To Sum Up

In the past few years, the species of reality-based game play has become more than just a household word.

According to Quora, 156 billion hours a year are spent playing video and online games worldwide.

Just recently, the topic of comfort and ergonomic health made its way into the mix and voila – the gaming chair was born.

Many models and versions, gobs of features, oodles of accessories and a myriad of prices – all made by a diverse group of companies that span the globe.

We now know that this is no longer an optional accessory for serious gamers but a necessity for pretty much all game jockeys.

Not just because of the basic qualities and rewards but more importantly for the health considerations.

All of a sudden, we’ve got a bunch of sedentary people leaping into position to vie for the MVP award in skateboarding and discus throwing, compliments of Wii.

What we end up with is a group of people scratching their heads, trying to figure out why they wound up in the ER being treated for a “real” injury.

cheap gaming chairs - chairs for gaming

Big Bang Theory’s Leonard is seen in one episode with an ice pack on his ankle, whining about how he absolutely cannot show up in the emergency room with yet “another video game injury”.

Now, we’ve discussed the fact that cheap can sometimes = crappy, which almost always = unhappy.

Better to look at price, relative to what you get in return.

Remember that shopping emotionally will only make you penny-wise and pound-foolish.

The term "cheap gaming chairs" can be misleading.

cgc

Sometimes we try to save a pocketful of nickels only to end up paying more in the end, due to a not-so-smart purchase.

There are more than several things to consider when looking for the best chairs for gaming.

We’ve covered most of them here, as well as the main attributes of the most popular models for 2016, built by the best-known manufacturers.

Know what features you need and make sure to have your checklist ready as you shop.

Bottom line is, do some research but don’t get overwhelmed.

Let experts like us guide you toward where you want to be.

Our particular method for choosing “the best” and “the cheapest” is very simple and clear-cut, so you’ll know that what we suggest is not only noteworthy, it’s genuine.

Please keep in mind that you don’t have to actually buy an item that we’ve recommended.

We’re certain that our suggestions will create a path for you to follow toward your final purchase destination.

Remember that a gaming chair is an important purchase – like buying a bed.

cgc

But it’s really way more fun.

And because it’s something that everyone in the home can use and enjoy, everyone gets involved and everyone gets excited.

Keep in mind that it makes a fantastic addition to your game room/space and you’ll be the envy of all your gaming buddies.

Unless of course you’re the last one in your group to actually get one.

cgc

If that’s the case, you’ll be the recipient of some lingering remarks regarding how great it is that you’re finally out of the stone-age.

Just take your licks……..and enjoy your new throne!

Bluetooth Gaming Chair -
It May Be Hot But Don’t Be Fooled

Before we talk about choosing a Bluetooth gaming chair, watch this really quick video of a hilarious conversation between The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon and Penny regarding Penny’s new "hair accessory" business venture:

So, What's The Difference Between A Bluetooth Gaming Chair And A Wireless Gaming Chair?

We think you'll agree that everything is better with Bluetooth, including of course, a Bluetooth gaming chair.

It’s a now, hip, happening, easy, convenient way to connect devices.

However, let’s make a distinction here.

If you buy a gaming chair that has wireless capabilities, that doesn’t mean it’s Bluetooth enabled.

Bluetooth and wireless are often mistaken for the same premise.

Although their connectivity and speed are about the same, they are very different concepts.

Top Wireless Gaming Chairs

Wireless technology is a telecommunications solution that uses electromagnetic waves rather than wires.

It has a wide range and multiple devices can be connected at one time, using any available wi-fi signal.

We recommend the X Rocker 51259 Pro H3 4.1 Wireless Audio Gaming Chair available at Amazon.

Top Bluetooth Gaming Chairs

Bluetooth is a groundbreaking wireless communication, built into billions of products on the market today.

When two Bluetooth enabled units want to “talk” to each other, they are easily “paired” together by the user and then the magic happens.

No dongles or transmitters and best of all, no tangled wires.

Bluetooth technology is short range and devices need to be in close proximity
of each other – usually no more than 30 feet.

While multiple devices can be paired, only one device can be connected at any given time.

While we're on the topic, crazy as it may sound, we're actually pondering what the plural of Bluetooth is.

Bluetooths?  Blueteeth?

Does anyone even know?

If those confounded wires are tripping you up , then by all means, go for a Wireless or Bluetooth enabled gaming chair.

Either way, it means no unsightly, confounded wires to trip over.

Make sure that whether you decide on a Bluetooth gaming chair or a wireless gaming chair, it includes the other options you want as well. Have your checklist handy!

Now, it’s a well-known fact that more and more people are buying gaming chairs for another reason - the sound and sensation experience.

Comfort, focus, performance and health are just sideline details.

The ultimate reality experience awaits you with built-in headrest speakers and throw-down subwoofers.

And we can't emphasize this enough:

Every crash, lightning strike, explosion and earthquake is not only heard but felt at the very core of your being.

Man, you are there.

All this with zero pesky wires getting in your way!

Gaming consoles can be easily connected using wireless or Bluetooth or with the supplied cables.

Remember that if you want to hook it up to your PC or TV, the chair should have HDMI support.

Relax And Slip Into Phenomenal Sound

While we’re on the topics of the Bluetooth gaming chair, wireless and sound, let’s quickly talk about the fact that music can also be enjoyed in a whole new way......by connecting your media easy-peasy to your new landing spot.

iPads, iPods, iPhones, smartphones, Mp3 players, boomboxes and even TV and PC can be connected to the chair, typically via wireless or Bluetooth but certainly by wired hookups as well.

Just be sure that the model you choose has all of the compatibility needed for your music components.

Bottom line is, who doesn’t need a break from all the daily chaos?

Let's use this wireless/Bluetooth thing to its max.

Now, close your eyes, sit back, relax and get lost in the sound.

You've created your own funky little game.

Best Dart Board - Top Rated Bristle And Electronic - All Reviewed

What's All The Fuss About?

Well, I'll tell you.........

Darts has got to be one of the most gut-busting, side-splitting get-together games ever invented.

That's why you need the best dart board available - one that fits your needs to a T. Much like that winning dart that fits plumb inside of the bulls-eye.

It’s the type of game that everyone can play and for some reason, no one gets snarky when they lose.

I mean, it’s not like golf. I watched my sweet husband pitch an entire set of $2,000 Arnold Palmer clubs off of the Bourne Bridge on our way home from vacation at Cape Cod, MA back in 1978.

That’s right. He just pulled the car over, got out, very quietly opened the trunk and tossed ‘em.

But I digress.

More and more of you are opting for home-play, rather than out and about at a bar or social club somewhere.

It makes lots of sense because most of the electronic dart boards have from 8-16 player capability.

This makes for such a lively exchange and we here at Game Room Heaven can’t push this sport hard enough!

Now, what type of board you play on depends on your preferences but we are great proponents of the new electronic style dart board.

At the same time, you can’t deny the good ‘ol bristle boards, either.

bdb

So, just some words of caution: Don’t buy something cheap, just for the sake of price.

We say this about all of the products we’ve introduced on this site.

Don't be penny-wise and pound foolish.

If you’re going to invest in something that’s going to take a beating (and believe me, even the best dart board will take a beating), then let it be something that can withstand the punishment.

We think you'll agree that if you buy something really cheap, it will end up falling out of the sky dead within just a few short months.

And you’ll end up buying another one waaaay before it’s time.

The cheaper the board, the sooner you'll buy a replacement.

On the other hand, you probably don't need to spend $$thousands$$ on bells and whistles you don’t need.

Unless you are hosting the national championships in your family room, you do not need a high-priced, pimped-out, commercial dart board.

You should always buy based on the value you get for your investment.

Just remember that the old phrase "You get what you pay for." is still very true.

But, as it turns out, you can get the best dart board for the money. The nice part is that we've done the work for you.

You've heard of pick and choose? All you have to do here is click and choose!

The History Of Darts

bdb

Hope and Anchor dart club | 20 Waterloo Street (now Macbeth Street), Hammersmith, London, UK. ca 1925. NB publican Charles Fletcher (seated front row center) with elm board

Many historians believe that the game of darts started during the Middle Ages.

Pitching arrows and dart-like projectiles in battle evidently didn’t stop there.

It's been said that soldiers who were trying to fill their boredom void between attacks would throw their leftover arrows at a wine cask cover.

It has also been indicated that archers-in-training would have to practice by throwing their arrows first, before being allowed to shoot.

The DMI ESPN World Series of Darts Licensed Staple-Free Bristle Dart Board is a great piece and will serve amateurs as well as starter darters who are amateur wannabees.

Not long after, people started tossing at the cross-section of a sizeable log, using the age cracks as a scoring layout.

Because the game became popular as an indoor pastime, the arrows were shortened and the game became even more prominent.

The game continued its popularity and spread globally throughout the peak of the British Empire.

The Harley-Davidson® 61995 Bar and Shield Dart Board Cabinet is a great piece and will serve amateurs as well as starter darters who are amateur wannabees.

At one time, it was said that the game of darts came over with the Mayflower, however, in later years those rumors were unproven.

bdb

It's true that immigrants probably brought their rendition of the sport, it has been implied that Native Americans had been entertaining themselves with a form of darts long before contact with British and Irish settlers.

Late 19th century poisoned darts. Democratic Republic of the Congo. Brooklyn Museum, NYC

The game actually became a popular pub game after World War II, when veterans returned from Britain.

Through the years, darts have become fairly regulated with its rules, equipment and countless game variations.

The game has progressed throughout its tenure.

By the late 1920s, the dart board finally had a bull’s eye, wired-off sections and definitive numbers.

Several years later, a material called sisal fiber had replaced the old wooden boards.

The Viper X-Treme Electronic Soft Tip Dart Board is a user-friendly way to transition to the electronic board. Tons of options.

In the early 1900s, the game of darts was in jeopardy of dying out in England.

bdb

Darts was considered a game of “chance” and the law did not allow these games in licensed pubs.

In 1908, Foot Anakin, owner of a popular bar, challenged the law.

He took the matter to court.

Anakin brought a dart board and called for a game with the clerk.

Anakin threw three darts for three 20s.

The clerk then tossed three darts.

The first two missed and the last one hit the number 7.

Anakin scored again with three double 20s.

The judge abruptly stopped play and asked Anakin if he would repeat that.

Anakin responded with three more double 20s.

The magistrate had been persuaded. Darts had been demonstrated to be a game of skill, not of chance.

The game of darts was again permitted in pubs
and the owners all had Foot Anakin to thank.

The Arachnid Cricket Pro 800 Electronic Dart Board With Arcade Style Cabinet is a gorgeous piece of furniture and will give your game room a taste of real style.

That Funky Numbering

As for how the crazy numbering system on the dart board came to be, there are conflicting stories.

Some give credit to Brian Gamlin, a British carpenter.

Others say it was Thomas William Buckle, a British wire worker.

Whoever it was, did it intentionally - to penalize poor aim and to reward skill.

Simple as that.

4 and 1 are on either side of 18, 1 and 5 are on either side of 20, 3 and 2 are on either side of 17. If you aim for the 20 sector, you’d better be on your game, otherwise you’ll end up in the 1 or the 5 slice.

All About Dart Boards

best dart board

Bristle

This is the most prevalent type of dart board used today. They became most popular due to the Dutch elm disease that shattered Britain’s wood supply in the 1970s. A material called sisal is used, with the edges pressed with metal bands. One of the main objectives when building the first sisal bard was the fact that when a dart was removed, there wasn’t a hole left in its place. The board mended itself for further play.

As we stated earlier, when shopping, make sure your choice meets the standards of competitive play. Crummy, cheap boards will literally fall apart while you watch and your buddies will start hanging around someone else’s house instead of yours. Wear and tear is inevitable for any bristle board so you’ll want a removable number hoop so you can rotate the worn parts of the board. As far as the wiring on the board, be sure to look for a “no staple” system.

The American Heritage Cavalier Bristle Dart Board Complete Set isn't just a stand-alone dart board. It sits in a trendy cabinet with scoring tables on either side.

Wires that are held down by staples (cheaper models) will cause more bounce-outs.

It’s definitely worth the extra moolah for a well-constructed “spider” (net metal divider that separates the numbers).

Some wiring structures are made with extra thin wire that is triangular in shape and will actually direct the dart into scoring position.

One last point – don’t get bristle confused with cork.

Bristle is not cork.

Cork is cork and it wears out fairly quickly.

Electronic

To me, the electronic board was to the bristle board as the gas grill was to the good ‘ol charcoal barbecue.

How could they take something so awesome and try to change it?

Well, my friend, they did.

If you’ve never tried an electronic dart board, you need to. Right now.

We can say with all confidence that it will far surpass the bristle board’s popularity in a very short amount of time.

One of the great aspects of this board is that it can be set up for play in a league using the Internet and some nifty networking. Whaaaat?

A company named Arachnid invented the electronic board, along with the well-matched soft tipped darts.

So, throw a soft dart at one of the tens of thousands of holes in the board, and your score is immediately recorded.

The Arachnid Cricket Pro 800 Electronic Dart Board will have your friends lined up at your door come Friday night.

Even if you’re a novice but think you may want to get really good someday, playing in a league will be a hefty goal.

Buy yourself a regulation sized board (15.5”), look for features like dart average so you can track your progress.

There is also a handicap component that equalizes the playing field so everyone feels welcome.

Some electronic boards also have a solo-play option that lets you play against the system for the ultimate practice time.

The Arachnid Cricket Pro 750 Electronic Dart Board is an earlier and therefore cheaper version of the Cricket Pro. Awesome choice for a real beginner.

Typically, these boards accommodate 8-16 players.

Make sure the scoring system is what you want and that it shows more than just 2 players’ scores at one time.

4 player scores is more realistic.

Lots of games are included, along with modifications or variations of these games.

Check that your board includes your favorites.

FYI, there is a crossover type of dart board, similar to bristle but has automatic scoring. Hard-tipped darts are used on these, so they tend to fall down dead sooner than not because of the wear and tear from the steel darts.

Magnetic

We have not read anything about the magnetic dart board except to say they are mainly for children.

And why not? Why should grown-ups have all the fun?

The only advice we can give is to be sure to get something sturdy enough to stand up to the abuse it will take.

You really don’t want a bunch of sad, crying kids standing around a dead dart board.

Wooden and Paper-Coiled

Neither of these is very popular today but certainly have had gigs in the dart world through the years.

They can still be purchased but most dart players, both novice and champs alike, would rather have the bristle or the electronic setups that are widely favored today.

Measurements

best dart board

The standard dartboard measurement is 18” diameter and has 20 numbered, round on one end triangular-shaped equal sections, as well as a bulls-eye.

Each section has a double ring on the outer scoring area and a triple ring on the inside.

These are scored as double and triple of the number, respectively.

The bulls-eye has an outer-ring, called the single bulls-eye, scoring 25 points and an inside ring, called the double bulls-eye, racking up 50 points.

The standard height from the floor to the actual bullseye is 5’, 8”

The distance between the front of the board and the toeline, or oche (pronounced “ockey”, as in hockey without the "h") is 7’, 9.25”

Regulatory

The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) -

bdb

The aim of the DRA is to be recognized as the regulatory body for the worldwide sport of Darts.

Their primary authority is to furnish and administer the rules and regulations that will promote the image and profile of the sport within professional, as well as amateur classes.

The DRA Rules Book is the foundation and specifies the requirements of conduct for players in DRA approved events.

Tournaments And Other News

There are many tournaments being held worldwide.

The Professional Darts Corporation has a most informative website that lists some of the most entertaining championships.

The PDC was originally formed as the World Darts Council in 1992 and now holds the spot for the leading professional body in the Dart world with over £7 million in prize money dispersed thus far throughout its global circuit.

The Skinny On Darts

Darts are comprised of barrels, with points made of plastic or steel, along with shafts and flights.

The flight helps to keep the dart on a straight trajectory and from straying when thrown.

Most darts come already assembled.

Each person has one set of 3 darts.

Each person throws 3 darts and then removes them before the next person throws.

Leaving darts in the board only causes damage when it’s the next person’s turn to throw.

Darts are typically sized to fit.

If your board includes one or two sets of darts, make sure they fit your hand comfortably.

Otherwise, save those for guests and visit your local sporting goods store and sample the different types and assizes before you buy.

There’s usually someone there that can help you choose just the right ones for your grip.

Brass Darts

Brass is the least expensive material and very soft.

Being mass-produced, the lower grade and integrity will most likely cause them to wear down and need replacing sooner rather than later.

Nickel/Silver Darts

The nickel dart is much tougher than brass and therefore more reliable in terms of endurance.

They are still a good deal where your wallet is concerned, especially if you’re just starting out.

Keep in mind that there is really no silver used here.

No one knows the what the correlation is.

Nevertheless, this is a good starter dart.

Tungsten Darts

Tungsten is an exceptionally dense metal and is denser than brass and nickel/silver.

This robust metal breeds darts that can endure lots of wear and tear and feel more comfortable grip-wise.

And believe it or not, these darts are more likely to land in closer groups on the board more often than those made with softer metals.

The most typical compounds that go into a tungsten dart are tungsten, iron, copper and nickel, although the specific combination depends on the manufacturer’s machining process and the costs involved.

These darts cost more because extremely dense metal requires more manpower to manufacture an item.

There are four major “levels” of tungsten darts, each one dependent on its percentage of tungsten, ranging from 50% to 98%.

Always buy from an honest shopkeeper and throw up a bright red flag when you see discounted tungsten darts.

Be sure to look at the percentage of tungsten somewhere on the label.

The higher the number, the better the quality.

Lower numbers typically mean cheap, sub-par quality imports.

Keep in mind that you won’t be replacing true tungsten darts for a very long time.

To Shaft Or Not To Shaft

best dart board

A shaft holds the flight away from the center of the barrel.

Shafts serve to hold the flights away from the center of mass of the dart barrel.

The shaft acts as a type of lever, causing the flight to oppose any sideward fluctuation.

Plastic

The cheapest of the shafts, they come in various colors but break easily, especially when throwing tight groups.

Made of nylon and sometimes polycarbonate.

Composite

The next level up from plastic, the bases are made of plastic and the tops are made of aluminum or other metals.

These perform really well, can endure a lot of abuse and will not vibrate loose as freely as solid aluminum.

Solid Aluminum

Solid aluminum shafts are more robust and enduring than plastic or composite.

They’re available in many colors and some are enhanced with etched spirals, flutes and stripes.

Be watchful, however, because they tend to vibrate loose when used with heavier darts.

Affixing rubber o-ring washers are suggested to keep this from happening.

On a positive note, they will most likely bend instead of breaking when clipped.

Just align it back in order for further use.

Spinning

An assortment of shaft designs are now available that allow the flight to move out of the way when clipped by another dart.

These shafts don’t enhance the dart’s glide but they will permit tight groups more often than not, by allowing the flights to settle up against one another.

Spinning shafts will also lessen the likelihood of torn flights and split shafts.

The Truth About Flights

bdb

Positioned at the ends or back of the dart are the wings.

They serve to secure the dart during its flight.

Contrary to popular opinion, flights do not produce lift.

They turn away any motion from the center of the dart.

Hard Flights

Made of rigid polyester plastic that doesn’t tear as often as soft flights.

If they do rip, they become throwaways.

While they aren’t flexible, they will tend to pop off of the shaft if they clip another dart.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it decreases any deviation in its path and tight groups form with ease.

An opaque compound known as Melinex is now used, instead of the original clear plastic, making brighter colors and designs available. (AKA poly-flights)

Nylon Flights

Constructed of ripstop nylon fabric, these flights are said to be the most durable and are virtually tear-free.

You’ll need a looser fit, so the slots on the shaft will need to be pried open a bit to conform.

Available in bright colors and tons of printed designs.

Other styles such as Dimplex, have been etched with a texture of sorts.

Some darters like this because it makes for a stiffer glide and the added surface area gives it more stability.

The slots will need to be pried to insert these flights.

Soft Flights

Very popular at one time, soft flights are rarely used now and are extremely difficult to find.

These flights are constructed from a flexible plastic sheet that is pre-printed with an assortment of designs and then creased into shape.

A strong bonding agent holds the layers together.

Magically, if the flight is torn, just press the layers together and presto – the glue will repair the tear.

One more thing to note is that if a soft flight is hit by another dart, it will bend out of the way. (AKA reseal-flights)

FYI, want to enhance the life of your flights? Prevent them from splitting at the back center by using flight protectors. They don’t weight the dart down, nor do they affect the flight of the dart.

To Sum Up

You may have the best air hockey table and the best 50 inch TV to entertain with, but the best dart board will win you more friends every time!

Bottom line is that whatever you decide, having the best dart board right at your fingertips most assuredly outweighs having to go out to a bar or pub to play.

bdb

Patrons are usually tipsy and game-play tends to be sub-par.

All this, as well as having to spend hard-earned money on drinks and eats makes for a pathetic night out.

And no one comes off looking good afterwards.

Now Picture This

bdb

You invited all your partners-in-crime. It’s BYOB and you put out some simple snacks and dips.

There's pounding at the back door. Then someone yells "Game on!"

Oh ya.

Before you know it, four hours have passed and y’all are planning the next darting night.

And we can't emphasize this enough:

Wives and girlfriends are satisfied that y’all are not out carousing, and sometimes it can even turn into a day of barbecue with friends and family - and yes, even in-laws!

Everyone’s happy.

Specialty

Yay for Boom-A-Rang air hockey! Love this game.

It’s just air hockey with a different slant on the game.

Players don’t stand opposite each other.

They stand next to each other.

The objective is for a player to hit the puck against the wall in front of them to try to get it to relay back [in a V shape] and into their puck pocket, directly in front of the opposing player.

What will they think of next?

Tabletop

These are more flexible when it comes to where you can play.

Tabletop means just that – something you can easily place on top of another surface.

They are obviously smaller than the other types and make a good choice if you don’t have a lot of space available for your leisure needs – and/or if you only have small children who want to play.

Our advice is to go to a decent toy retailer and pick something up.

Price

baht

As for cost, we never recommend any type of product that you’ll have to replace in a few months.

I promise you -- we’re not just saying that so you’ll spend more.

We just can't emphasize this enough.........from our many years of being in this business, generally speaking:

Cheap = Crappy
and
Crappy = Unhappy

Your goal will be to weigh all of the features, as well as the overall review, in relation to the price.

You can still make a great decision in finding the best air hockey table and not break the bank.

We’re here to help you.

We’ve done the research and put everything together here, for your convenience.

We try not to feature a product without any customer reviews, but once in a while 1) If the product is from a well-known company that stands behind their stuff 2) If there are no other choices that have decent reviews 3) If it's a new product release -- we’ll feature it.

Again, look at the company and the features relative to the cost.

And know that 99.9% of the time, if something happens to go wrong, the company will be sure to make you whole again.

baht

If worse comes to worse, you can always take your case to The People’s Court.

What a hoot that would be!

Joking aside, it all comes down to using your noggin.

Use it – go with your gut and picture you and your family screaming laughing as you play.

Don't forget to buy some extra mallets for playing teams.

Oh man, for some families that stands for something we refer to as "domestic lunacy"

But fun nonetheless.

Space

baht

Remember to take your game room/space into consideration when you purchase.

You don’t want the room to be ‘all table’.

I think Seinfeld did an episode on that very situation.

It was hilarious........but your life is not a TV sitcom!

It’s real as rain and you need to know that you can’t pull it off like Kramer did.

If space is limited, just swallow your pride and consider a smaller size model.

If space is really limited, a tabletop model might do, if it's only the kids who'll be playing.

And if there’s no room for an actual table, you can set the tabletop game right on the floor for a nifty alternative.

Kids love to play on the floor!

There are also foldaway tables, although it’s a bit difficult to find a sturdy one. Just be cautious.

Now, if you have a ton of space in reserve, plan to take it to the limit.

A splashy high-end basic model will give you braggin’ rights and beckon your friends every weekend.

Skill Level

baht

Understand also that in terms of price and maybe even scalability; if you’re an experienced player who just happened to get really good at the game; or you actually have the peanuts to enter tournaments, you’ll want to spend a bit more.

An intermediate player will obviously want something more mid-level.

Children and adult beginners can get by with something basic.

Just remember that once someone masters the game, they normally need to trade-up to something more suited to their aptitude in a very short time.

Keep in mind that some basic air hockey tables count on their sleek surface, rather than a strong motorized air system to get the job done.

For an adult beginner, that could be enough to dishearten even the most good-natured of players.

The good news is that the majority of basic models are sturdy and have robust air blowers.

You'll have to spend a tad more but you'll be glad you did.

 The perfect air hockey table is a terrific investment.

Fan Strength

The air blowers (fans) are something to consider as well.

Air hockey means “air” hockey. Otherwise, it would just be called hockey.

best air hockey table

The puck ‘floats’ on a burst or stream of air.

On kids’ tables, when the puck is usually smaller, the air stream is, of course, much lower to accommodate.

Just make sure to check the blower quality on the larger tables to ensure it can handle a regulation-size puck.

Extras

One feature that comes with quite a few tables is adjustable legs or something similar, such as floor levelers.

At some point, you may find that your table is not level and the puck embarks on a ghostly jaunt across the table, completely opposite from where you sent it, right before your very eyes.

Instead of having to fold a matchbook in half, shove it under one of the legs and pray that it stays there for the remainder of the game, if your table comes equipped with adjustable legs, ba-da-bing – all fixed with nary another thought.

The best features are the sound effects, tones and yes -- some even utilize crowds cheering when someone scores.

best air hockey table

We know of at least one model that plays the National Anthem before you start the game.

Some models come with an automatic puck return, which is something we probably don't think about when we're shopping.

I guess not having that feature would be like not having an automatic ball return when you're out bowling.

Although, it's probably easier to manually pull the puck out of the pocket than it would be to slide down the alley on your toosh to retrieve a bowling ball.

Anyway, something to think about.

We are, admittedly, kind of a lazy bunch nowadays.

Scoring

baht

Some tables don’t come equipped with automatic or electronic scoring.

Be sure to think about the fact that someone will have to keep score manually and this could definitely take away from the game if a player has to stop after every goal to write it down.

Unless, of course, you have a third friend who doesn’t mind sitting there bored to death with pen and paper and has nothing better to do on a Saturday night.

For the tables that do come with a scoreboard, it can be attached over the table or on one of the table sides.

Warranty

A quick little something on guarantees and assurance:

Be sure to research the manufacturer’s claims and warranties and base part of your purchase decision on price relative to how strongly the manufacturer stands behind his product.

If it gets a big enough ouchie, you want to make sure his bandaid will fit.

However, remember that extended warranties can typically be a waste of money. Most credit card companies offer extra protection, so check with them first.

How Do Air Hockey Tables Work?

Air hockey is fun for everyone.

As they say, “excitement for ages 5 to 105!”

You don’t have to be an aspiring champion to absolutely love this game.

So, how does this contraption work?

What’s the secret operative here?

Is the puck really a disc-like hover-board?

How does the puck just seem to glide across the surface without any effort?

Believe it or not, it’s fairly uncomplicated.

An air hockey table is made up of a glossy surface, typically made of plastic or a compound close to it.

best air hockey table

The sides are raised a bit so that the puck cannot go flying off the table and take out someone’s eye, therefore making it not such a fun game.

There are tiny holes driven throughout the tabletop.

This creates a concise, smooth and stable playing field.

A motor under the table is used to blow air through these jets, creating the illusion that the puck is defying gravity, suspending itself in thin air.

When you maneuver the puck with your mallet, it says “okie-dokie” and just floats away to its destination. Magical!

Maintenance

After a rigorous length of playing time, any item like this is bound to have a complication. A poorly operating fan is the most typical issue people will encounter.

Like any other kind of fan, dust and grime can collect on the blades over time, causing it to run poorly and consequently making the game run sluggishly.

It can also be the culprit for dirt clogging the surface holes, forcing less air out from the blower.

At least once a month (or more, depending on the amount of play), you should clean off the blades with a damp cloth.

The more friction there is between surface and puck, the slower the game will run.

Don’t use any type of utensil to clean out the holes.

Should the need arise, use some type of compressed air container with a thin pipe or straw attached to suck out the dirt.

Brief History of Air Hockey

Working on the idea of air hockey began in 1969 by a team of engineers working for Brunswick Billiards, named Crossman, Kenrick and Baldwin.

baht

February/2015 -- Kenrick and Baldwin were honored by the Muskegon Lumberjacks at the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan for being the original inventors of the air hockey game. Image courtesy of Grand Haven Tribune [full story]

They had the idea that a friction-less playing surface would be the concept for a new and exciting pastime.

No friction = faster play. However, after a tenuous few years, nothing came of the idea.

There simply was no interest by anyone who mattered. In 1972, another Brunswick engineer who had a passion for the air hockey game, named Bob Lemieux came along.

He took over where his fellow engineers had left off.

He was incredibly successful in creating the first friction-less air hockey table.

The notion of low-pressure air jets took off.

It caught on fairly quickly. Everyone wanted in.

So successful, it became the first thing customers asked about when they entered bars, clubs, entertainment venues and arcades.

best air hockey table

Before you know it, leagues were formed and tournaments were the new challenge.

In 1973 the Houston Air Hockey Association formed the first air hockey team.

Not long afterward, the United States Air Hockey Association (yes indeedy, folks – there actually is such an organization) created and installed the official air hockey rulebook.

Since then, annual tournaments and championships have been held and so far, twelve players have won the title of World Air Hockey Champion.

So, this activity is relatively new compared to billiards and the like.

But its popularity knows no bounds.

As for who should get credit for the patent of friction-less table play is still a mystery.

Recognition

The United States Air Hockey Association  have declared air hockey an actual sport.

Who would have thunk it? Air hockey of all things!

They are extremely scrupulous about which air hockey tables are approved and authorized for official play.

Remember to thoroughly clean out the underside of your table when you’re finished, to ensure that the dust doesn’t accumulate and blow back out onto the table surface.

A Few Basics About The Game

Rules, regulations and even design have changed somewhat since air hockey hit the streets. Official rule book can be found here.

Like most other similar games, this is to be expected, due to adjustments and developments of different stances, grips and drifts.

Drifts have definitely become more complex, making the game even more interesting and engaging.

Drifting is when a player lightly taps the puck with the mallet in order to position it for a shot.

It’s pretty much a pass to yourself into the area (called the shooting zone) where most of your shots will take place from.

Drifts can be grouped together in clusters in order to confuse the player’s opponent, sending the puck back and forth, hitting it a number of times continuously.

As in pool or billiards, these drifts can be set up in a way that can confuse the opponent even more, by sending the puck in a different direction than what it appeared to be making by putting some ‘spin’ on the puck with a swift movement of the mallet.

FYI, the shooting zone is essentially an imaginary zone on the table, exactly behind the center line, allowing you to get as close as possible to your rival’s side of the table to give you an edge on heightened accuracy.

The shooting zone doesn’t restrict the number of shots a player can take.

Trick shots, angles, banks and straights can be attempted from this area.

To Sum Up

Having one of these tables in your home pays off in relation to what you would spend to go out to an establishment to play, whether for social interaction and sport or to fine-tune your skills for tournaments.

Oculus Rift Review

How does Oculus Rift stand up to its competition, HTC Vive? Take a look at one tech reviewer's opinion here.....

Bottom Line

Oculus Rift has it sewn up in terms of comfort and the enhanced virtual reality experience will come once the additional peripherals are released.

HTC Vive is more immersive into the VR experience but is so heavy that it can distract from the adventure. One customer said it was like wearing a pair of giant bookends.

Read the reviews for Oculus on Amazon.com. Customers could not be more excited with their experience. They say that it's one of the most exhilarating phenomenon they've ever been witness to and it can't be explained unless you try it.

We can't emphasize this enough: Our opinion is that Oculus wins hands-down.

I suspect that with the one of the top-rated cheap gaming chairs available and one of these VR headsets, you'll be struttin' yer stuff and envied by all. So......

!!  What are you waiting for?  !!
